Frequently Asked Questions
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Most people agree that acupuncture is practically painless. However, a slight tingling, pressure or burning may be felt momentarily when it reaches the correct spot under the skin. The needles are (disposable) extremely thin and sterilized according to modern surgical standards. It is important that the patient be relaxed and comfortable during treatments so that desired results can be attained. This indicates that the Qi has been reached.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Acupuncture has withstood the test of time for millions of people. It is a completely safe system with virtually “no side effects”. After an acupuncture treatment, most people will experience a sense of well being, relaxation and often be energized.
Is Acupuncture for You?
Many people are helped by acupuncture treatment and retain their improvement for months or years. The people whose symptoms return may be helped again. In Florida, acupuncture has been accepted for primary healthcare.
What are the Chances of Being Helped?
A high percentage of patients experience good to complete improvement. Results are directly related to the patients willingness to cooperate with the prescribed treatment regimen. As in other forms of treatment, results are not guaranteed. As a matter of fact, most people in the West who seek acupuncture have conditions which have proven resistant to other types of treatment. Many patients try it as a last recourse and find the solution to their problem.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Care for our patients is divided into 3 phases: Relief Care, Corrective Care and Maintenance Care. The number of treatments in each phase will vary from person to person depending on the complexity or severity of their health issues. During the Initial Examination the Acupuncture Physician will do a complete Health History Intake including Chinese Tongue & Pulse Diagnosis. After the examination the Physician will recommend an initial number of visits for the patient.
- Relief Care: Relief Care addresses the symptoms of the disease, but does not heal the cause of the disease. Most patients begin treatment in order to provide quick relief from pain, discomfort and other symptoms. Frequent visits are necessary during this phase to promote quick recovery. During the Relief Phase of care, you will notice that your discomfort and symptoms have been dramatically reduced or eliminated. You are now ready to enter the next phase of healing.
- Corrective Care: The goal of Corrective Care is to remove the symptoms or pain while also correcting the cause of the problem as well. Corrective Care is necessary to remove the actual cause of the problem. Visits may be less frequent during this phase as your overall health improves. Although you may not experience symptoms during this time, it is important to continue care to strengthen, build and support the body.
- Maintenance Care: Care received during the Wellness Phase serves as preventative care and works to remove the cause of problems before symptoms arise. Small imbalances will be addressed and treated before they can flare up into major health concerns.
Treatments will be most effective when the patient follows the schedule of treatments recommended by the Acupuncture Physician. The Acupuncture Physician will periodically re-examine the patient to track their progress through the phases of care.
